Another year nearly gone !!

Posted by | 18th December 2017 | Uncategorized

So this time next week it will be Christmas day and for the people in the hospitality industry they will generally be able to breathe and take stock.

Last Friday is known these days as “Black Friday” as so many business go out for meals, drinks etc and so most venues in the industry brace themselves for the impact they know is coming.

It is a tough career choice as your time off is limited at this time of year and it has an effect on your relationships with family, friends etc but it is also a great choice to make as how many other industries allow you to work anywhere in the world and to meet fantastic people who you then have as friends for the rest of your life.

So enjoy the next 2 weeks or so and then look back at what you have achieved and start to plan for what can be better next year.

Have a great one all and “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”,also as last year no cards but I am again going to donate to Dementia UK as it has had such a profound impact on my family and I with what has been 3 family members suffering.

Hospitality

Posted by | 5th October 2017 | Uncategorized

So as you do been seeing some interesting posts on various social media outlets about hospitality to do with all aspects of it.

So for those who have had recent success with awards and recognition from your peers then well done to all of you and what an honour it is to have that special feeling.

Also I have seen articles on Michelin awards, retention of the stars and also to the newcomers who have just been named as the “New Kids on the Block”,even though we all know this takes years of hard work and dedication by everyone involved and lessons and experiences learned from previous employment.

Fantastic to see how the dedicated people of this industry are always driving to be better and so innovative.

What I have also seen is the hard work that is going into attracting the next generations chefs, front of house, managers etc and the lengths needed to engage with GenX.

I have recently been to a 2 day Coaching Assistant course for athletics and regularly go the the local athletics club and train under 13’s and realise even when they are there the phone is still “King” if we let it be.

Anyway keep focused, positive and all you desire will come your way if you work hard enough.

So have met with a great client today who just enthuses everything about hospitality and their values, ethics and how they can keep their people engaged and as part of the company as they move forward and expand.

The company are led by iconic individuals who have been in the industry for many years and have now got a new vechicle they are moving forward with.

It is clear they have a passion, drive and the know how to move the goal posts again this time round but need like minded individuals to go with them on the journey and who knows where it will go !! , maybe to outer space and where no man has been before.

Keep watching to see how exciting it gets.

Hospitality

What is hospitality and how is it that some places get it right and yet some seem to get it so wrong.

How would we best describe what we think is good hospitality,is it good service, nice food, great venue etc or is it simply felling good about the whole experience.

I went out with my family on Sunday for lunch at a shall we say a branded pub and restaurant part of a well established what we would say is a brewing company that has over recent years become more diverse.

Upon arrival I was pointed to the table by the Manager and informed “it’s that long table over there in the window”,job dome some may say, other’s may disagree as he only had to walk a little further to said table.

Anyway we had a variety of food as we had 5 adults and 4 children so lot’s of items, this included “Fish & chips,Roast Turkey Sunday Roast,Pizza,2 Nut Roasts we have 2 veggies in the house and other item’s.

Upon the arrival of all the food we then had to ask for “Tartare sauce,Cranberry sauce,Mayo as well as other items.

Now the reason I mention about hospitality is this, when you are serving these items on your menu why are these not offered as part of the service how is it now that you have to ask for things that should be part of the overall experience.

Anyway just goes to show we all have our own ideas of what we believe is hospitality but remember when you are there and they ask the question is everything alright, tell them if it is or if not tell them no,let them resolve the matter and don’t post it on “Trip Advisor” if you didn’t have the gumption to let them know if you were not happy.

Hospitality in the UK

Posted by | 31st August 2017 | Uncategorized

So as I speak to the clients I work with across the UK it is becoming clear that the delay in being able to deliver certain requirements to the EU workforce in the UK is already having a detrimental effect on what was already short of labour in all ares of the industry.

As a career it has been slated as a career of choice by both the millenials as well as their parents.

The hospitality industry delivers a huge amount to the UK economy both in terms of GDP and also the we have become a service led economy even though any number of poloticos seem to believe that manufacturing will make a huge comeback.

Anyway the industry leaders need to get together with the goverment and see how we can best promote this and also look for ways of easing visas and work permits for people outside of the EU marketplace.

Having recently been on a cruise in the med what was noticeable was that large parts of the food and beverage teams were from India and also the Phillipines who both have a more defined  viewpoint of working in this business,so maybe something to look at for the future.

I know it can be ardous hours and sometimes feel tedious but the movers and shakers need to look at recruitment, training and development as well as staff retention urgently.

This now seems to be the time to bring the business into to the 21st century.
